John cut his teeth in law with inspired lawyers and movements in South Africa, where he worked with SECTION27 and the mighty Treatment Action Campaign to bring litigation that changed
thousands of lives and won global renown.

Later, John joined Georgetown Law’s O’Neill Institute for National & Global Health
Law to support lawyers and organizers around the world in litigation campaigns for
human rights.

John was also proud to serve as a public defender in the Arapahoe trial office of the
Colorado State Public Defender. He fought in hearings, on the pleadings, and at trial
to safeguard the rights of people charged with everything from traffic infractions to
murder.

John has extensive experience in trial and complex litigation. He has
drafted and contributed to major law and policy in multiple countries, consulted for the
United Nations and strategic litigation campaigns, clerked for a federal judge in the
Eastern District of New York, and taken many criminal and civil cases to bench and jury trials.

 

John is a member of the North Carolina State Bar, the Colorado State Bar, and the Virginia State Bar. He lives in his hometown, Winston-Salem, North Carolina.
